Heartwork | Ustadh AbdelRahman Murphy
Roots opened in early 2018 as a community space, dedicated to providing a warm environment, facilitating great conversations, being accessible in space and in faith, and giving each member of our community a home-away-from-home. Our goal is to provide opportunities and experiences to supplement the Islamic institutions in the Dallas Fort-Worth area. Our efforts are under the guidance and mentorship of Qalam. We Aspire To Facilitate Spiritual And Social Spaces That Are Welcoming, Meaningful, And Nurturing, In The Spirit Of The Prophetic Community. The Prophetic practice of welcoming and embracing community is at the core of a safe space. We aspire to be a community that grows towards the ideals of our faith and spirituality together, while continuing to appreciate each of our experiences. Our philosophy is built upon the belief that spirituality prospers in the environment of social semi-sacred space and in the reflective state of individual worship.

Heartwork - Purification of the Heart: Ostentation/Showing Off (Riya)
Sunday May 19, 2024
Sunday May 19, 2024
Young Professionals: tonight we'll be discussing our second disease: showing off/ostentation (riyaa' in Arabic). Doing acts that are supposed to be virtuous and for Allah, but doing them for a reason that is not sincerely for Allah. This disease is one of the most challenging because of its ability to exist within the heart of a person completely undetected. There are moments, though, where the symptoms of this disease become abundantly apparent. How do we know if we're sincere? How do we fight our nafs in our effort to do things for Allah alone? How do we mitigate the effects of feeling riyaa' creeping up within us when we are doing something that should be for Allah alone?Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. Sunday May 19, 2024
Sunday May 19, 2024
Young Professionals: the sins of the tongue hold particular significance in the Quran and Hadith literature. Allah and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ refer to the tongue as an part of the human body that is so small but can inflict so much harm on ones self and others.Throughout the next few weeks, we'll be going over some of the diseases of the heart that manifest through the tongue. Tonight's disease is backbiting - what is it? What does it mean to backbite someone? What if what I am saying is true - is it still backbiting?Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. Heartwork: Purification of The Heart - Arrogance
Sunday May 19, 2024
Sunday May 19, 2024
Heartwork: when Allah detailed to us the fatal flaw of Shaytan, the Quran says that he arrogantly defied Allah, and in that arrogance he found his downfall. The Quran further narrates the stories of many people and nations of the past that sabotaged their hearts by means of arrogance, while they were unaware of their spiritual disease. That’s the toughest part, these ailments can sneak up on us and have an effect on us before we know it.Arrogance is commonly reduced to the feeling or belief that someone thinks they’re better than another - but it’s much more complex than that. It is a disease that is always looming, with symptoms that must be treated right away before the impact is significant.

Heartwork - Purification of The Heart: Heedlessness (Ghaflah)
Sunday May 19, 2024
Sunday May 19, 2024
Heartwork tonight will focus on a disease that is an absence of remembrance, a void in God-consciousness: ghaflah. We all know the disappointment of forgetting something important - imagine how frequently we forget Allah, and how we feel when we come upon that realization. While we mentally know that our faith is the most important element of our lives, our heart may not always reflect that. The Prophet ﷺ warned us of the danger of falling into spiritual forgetfulness when he said, "The example of the one who remembers their Lord, in comparison to the one who does not remember their Lord, is that of a living person compared to a dead one."The status of a spiritual heart being filled with life or being void and dead is directly related to how much we remember Allah. Battling this disease, ghaflah, is critical. What are its symptoms? Where does it come from? And how can we treat it?Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers.
