Heartwork | Ustadh AbdelRahman Murphy
Roots opened in early 2018 as a community space, dedicated to providing a warm environment, facilitating great conversations, being accessible in space and in faith, and giving each member of our community a home-away-from-home. Our goal is to provide opportunities and experiences to supplement the Islamic institutions in the Dallas Fort-Worth area. Our efforts are under the guidance and mentorship of Qalam. We Aspire To Facilitate Spiritual And Social Spaces That Are Welcoming, Meaningful, And Nurturing, In The Spirit Of The Prophetic Community. The Prophetic practice of welcoming and embracing community is at the core of a safe space. We aspire to be a community that grows towards the ideals of our faith and spirituality together, while continuing to appreciate each of our experiences. Our philosophy is built upon the belief that spirituality prospers in the environment of social semi-sacred space and in the reflective state of individual worship.

This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 15.One of the principle beliefs that Muslims hold sacred is the concept of a Hereafter - that every single person’s actions in this worldly life will be measured and weighed in accordance with their responsibilities to God and everyone around them, and through God’s mercy and grace they will either be given Paradise, or by God’s justice some will suffer the consequences of flagrant spiritual negligence. This is a pretty powerful canvas for reflection, as it stands. One aspect of the Afterlife that is especially powerful, though, is the fact that the knowledge about its exact time and various details about its occurrence are hidden from humanity. What is the importance of veiling the Day of Judgment from humanity? Allah explains in this passage of Surah Taha.Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 20.Allah (swt) grants Prophet Musa (as) the experience of two miracles - one to do with his staff, and one to do with his hand - as a part of Musa's orientation to prophethood. Then, Allah gives him the greatest challenge of his life, giving him the task of going to the greatest tyrant of his era, Pharoah, and addressing his transgressions and calling him to change his ways. What lessons do these miraculous moments hold for us? What is Musa's response to Allah giving him a task that might seem - to the untrained eye - too great to handle? Allah makes these lessons clear to us in tonights passage.Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 28.In this passage, Musa is seeking aid from Allah regarding the task at hand; Allah has told Musa (as) that he is a messenger, and that he must go to Pharoah and convey the message of truth and justice of Islam to him. This is the most overwhelming task that Musa has been given in his life. Despite having gotten by in life until now, and despite being ordained a messenger, Musa exemplifies wisdom and humility in his dua he makes to Allah as he requests help for his task. How does he make dua? How does he show this humility and thoughtfulness? We'll discuss this tonight.Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. Sunday May 19, 2024
This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 42.Pharoah is one of the greatest tyrants of all time - he oppressed thousands and thousands under his control, and eventually inflated his ego to the point where he pronounced "I am god the most high!" His transgressions against God and humanity reached such limits, Allah gave Musa and Harun (as) the mission to go and speak to him. When someone is clearly in the wrong, and they wrong others while they're at it, when we address their mistakes/aggressions, the last thing we think about is to make sure we speak to them with etiquette, care, and compassion. Normally, our goal is to show them they're wrong, and to end the harm that they're doing - our etiquette is an afterthought (if a thought at all). The way that Allah instructed Musa to speak Pharoah may surprise us.Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. The fear that they have is manifest, and so Allah guides them to what is the best presentation, with nuances of wisdom and guidance along the way. Then the moment comes, the conversation between Musa and Pharoah is had, demonstrating the characteristics of virtue against the characteristics of corruption.Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers. This week’s session of Heartwork, we’ll be discussing the next passage in Surah Taha, starting at verse 72.After the showdown between Prophet Musa (as) and the magicians (on behalf of Pharoah), the magicians who had previously devoted their life and work to Pharoah recognized the truth of the message of Islam and submitted. Threatened with execution, they remained firm, ultimately choosing Allah despite what awaited them. The next passage moves on to address the final moments that Musa (as) and Bani Israel had with Pharoah. Their escape, being pursued by the army, the miracle Allah granted them to save them, and how the very same miracle Allah granted them was the downfall of Pharoah and his army. The moment submission of Musa (as) and his people was the very same moment of destruction for their oppressor.Every program we’re able to produce and upload for our community online is possible through the support of our sustainers.
